Unlike the normal format of most of ‘My sent emails‘ posts, where I essentially post a response to something that landed in my inbox, this post is prompted by the discussion going on in the comments of this post where I said:
…I send out quite a few random cold-call emails. Compliments on profiles (as I said, this started things with my last boy), appreciation of photos, comments on posts they made, questions about interesting viewpoints, sometimes simple appreciation for their presence etc. I do it with no expectations, just because I feel like it. Sometimes I get no reply, sometimes a quick exchange, sometimes it leads to a conversation… and sometimes, I hit the jackpot! You never know.
I thought I would throw up an example of just such an email that I sent recently.

Hello CutelyConstructedNick,
I just wanted to drop you a note to say that I am enjoying your posts, and I think your profile is excellent also. Your thoughtful contributions are quite lovely, and in the scheme of things, also very brave. Kudos.
I look forward to what comes next.

Brave? What makes a comment (or a series of comments) on an online discussion board “very brave”?

He was making himself vulnerable in his posts without any fear (or maybe with fear, but doing it anyway). I see that as emotional bravery, especially in a forum where there are those who might attack him for it. I admire that quality.

Well your last try out was not bad. This one is even better.
And you could sneak the topic of your cooking in there, just casual like.

I'll keep that in mind and try to work it in next time.
